Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese Continue to Make WNBA History

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, who dominated the college basketball scene, are now making waves and breaking records in the WNBA.

On Sunday, Clark led the Indiana Fever to a 92-75 victory over the Seattle Storm, setting yet another league record. Along with her 23 points, the 22-year-old recorded her 225th assist, surpassing Ticha Penicheiro's record for the most assists by a rookie in WNBA history, a record set in 1998. “To pass someone like her is incredible. She’s a legend in our game. It’s super cool, but I’m hoping for many more,” said Clark, who leads the league with 8.3 assists per game.

Clark’s record-breaking moment occurred in the second quarter and was acknowledged by Penicheiro in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Records are meant to be broken…it shows growth and evolution. Can’t think of a better player to break it,” Penicheiro wrote, as the Fever shared a video of the former WNBA star congratulating Clark. Clark finished the game with nine assists, bringing her season total to 232.

This accomplishment adds to an impressive list of achievements from Clark’s debut WNBA season. She already became the first rookie in league history to record a triple-double and set another milestone with 19 assists in a single game. Meanwhile, just like in college, Angel Reese is matching Clark’s brilliance with her own historic performances.

On Sunday, Chicago Sky rookie Reese posted 19 points and 20 rebounds in an 86-68 loss to the Phoenix Mercury, becoming the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 20 double-doubles in a single season. Reese, who leads the league in rebounding with 12.3 per game, accomplished this feat in just 27 games and is now only two double-doubles away from tying Tina Charles' record for most double-doubles by a rookie, set in 2010.

Earlier this season, Reese also set the record for most consecutive double-doubles in WNBA history.
